Taika Waititi dirigerà il nuovo film di Star Wars. È stato comunicato ieri, e infatti ieri ero felicissimo, vi spiego perché in cinque concisi passaggi. Ma prima breve riassunto delle puntate precedenti: chi diavolo è Taika Waititi?
Taika Waititi è il regista e sceneggiatore di Jojo Rabbit, nonchè l’attore che interpreta Hitler nello stesso film, ma a quello arriviamo dopo. È prima di tutto un “Kiwi”, ovvero uno Neozelandese di discendenza Maori. È estremamente riservato sulla sua vita privata. Di lui si sa che appena ventenne ha fatto parte di un gruppo comico che ha avuto buona risonanza in Nuova Zelanda, ma l’inizio della sua avventura da regista è da attribuirsi al cortometraggio “Two cars, one night” del 2004, che viene candidato all’Oscar come miglior cortometraggio nel 2005. Ve lo metto qui:
Da qui comincia a mescolare una serie di collaborazioni di diversa natura (consulente alla sceneggiatura per Moana della Disney, attore in Lanterna Verde), dirige alcune puntate di serie tv, a volte le scrive anche (Flight of the Conchords, Super city, The Mandalorian), continua a dirigere corti autoprodotti (Thor Team, Team Darryl), esce con quattro film (magari non capolavori, ma tutti decisamente notevoli per creatività e cura del dettaglio), in cui spiccano le sue doti comiche.
Segnaliamo qui il mockumentary comico sulla vita dei vampiri “What we do in the shadows“, da cui verrà tratta una serie TV:
Nel 2017 viene chiamato a dirigere Thor Ragnarok, e soprattutto viene candidato a due Oscar con il suo film Jojo Rabbit, uno dei due lo vince, quello come miglior sceneggiatura non originale (sua).
Una volta inquadrato il personaggio, ecco i cinque motivi per cui ho grandi aspettative riguardo a cosa riuscirà a fare con Star Wars:
1. Riesce a contrastare la macchina produttiva, restando indie
Nel dirigere Thor Ragnarok, ha scritto solo una sceneggiatura basilare, lasciando completa libertà agli attori. Il film, secondo le sue dichiarazioni, è improvvisato all’80%. Se questo è già un bell’azzardo, a Hollywood, è un cambiamento epocale per un film a budget medio/alto di supereroi.
2. Sa recitare
Se ci fate caso i registi che hanno personaggi vitali, vivaci e innovativi hanno spesso un passato da attori (qualcuno ha detto Tarantino?). Potrebbe porre fine alla tristissima sequela di personaggi piatti e one-liner a cui ci hanno abituato i film di supereroi degli ultimi dieci anni.
3. Cita i film giusti
In un’intervista che vi riporto qui (sezione cinema e serie), ha dichiarato che quando ha discusso le sue idee riguardo a Thor Ragnarok con i produttori, ha detto loro di voler fare “una versione di Shakespeare a colazione ambientata nello spazio”.
Shakespeare a colazione (Withnail and I) è un film a basso budget del 1987 del regista inglese Bruce Robinson. Il film è diventato un cult per via delle situazioni e dei dialoghi surreali tra personaggi, ve ne metto uno:
4. È un regista che sa scrivere e conosce la materia
Che vi sia piaciuto o meno Jojo Rabbit, è innegabile che l’adattamento del libro da cui è tratto, questo, gli abbia permesso di staccarsi dall’immaginario indie e di puntare al grande pubblico, trattando un tema scomodo come il nazismo, in maniera profonda ma al contempo leggera. Contemporaneamente ha dimostrato di conoscere molto bene la materia collaborando alla serie The Mandalorian, forse la cosa più fedele all’universo Star Wars prodotta ad oggi dalla Disney.
5. Ha un’attenzione particolare per le colonne sonore strambe
La colonna sonora di Jojo Rabbit è una raccolta di canzoni scelte con genio e passione, che contiene tracce dei Beatles (magica la versione di I want to hold your hand in tedesco), di Tom Waits e di David Bowie. Ve la metto qui:
